Medicare and commercial payors are rapidly migrating to Bundled Payment for surgical procedures. Under bundled payment, hospitals are at risk for the entire episode of surgical care from 72 hours prior to surgery to 30 days after the procedure including hospital fees, physician fees, SNF costs and rehabilitation therapy.
Successful hospitals have re-engineered clinical processes and reduced costs allowing both physicians and hospitals to generate more income than traditional FFS models.
