BCBA state of the profession survey: Navigating urgent challenges and shaping the future

The demand for autism care is rising, but the specialists who provide it are burning out.

Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) are at the heart of applied behavior analysis (ABA), a widely used therapy model for individuals with autism and developmental disabilities. But a new national survey of 390 practicing BCBAs reveals just how strained this workforce has become.

High stress, administrative overload and limited collaboration are jeopardizing both clinician well-being and client outcomes at a time when demand has never been higher.

What's inside:

  • 89% of BCBAs report work-related stress, with more than 1 in 4 saying they are “very” or “unmanageably” stressed.
  • 61% say admin work interferes with client care; 45% still rely on manual processes
  • Only 9% reported using data-based technology to guide dosage decisions, underscoring critical opportunities for standardization, training and data support.
  • 26% say lack of caregiver engagement is the top barrier to client progress
