The right test for the right patient — A fireside chat on advancing diagnostics in the ED

Friday, November 21st, 2025 | 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM CT

Emergency physicians face enormous diagnostic pressure: high patient volume, vague symptoms and limited time. Choosing the wrong test delays care, increases costs and worsens outcomes. With several new diagnostic tools entering the market, clinicians must navigate a growing array of options to determine which tests truly improve patient care in the ED.

To explore these new technologies, we are bringing together two experts with firsthand experience in developing infectious disease diagnostics for ED use.

Hear from Nathan Shapiro, MD, attending physician at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard professor, and Melissa Naiman, PhD, Beckman Coulter's Medical Director for Sepsis and Host Response. They'll share practical, case-informed guidance on aligning emerging diagnostics with real ED workflows.

Learnings include:

  • How host response testing supports faster, more accurate infection decisions and reduces the risk of sepsis
  • How to understand (and apply) the science of biomarkers
  • Guidance for mapping diagnostics to patient acuity and clinical scenarios
