Evidence for Easily Improving O.R. Environmental Hygiene

Monday, May 23rd, 2016 | 1:00-2:00 PM CST

Environmental hygiene plays a critical role in infection prevention in the operating room, but must be done efficiently so as not to negatively impact room turnover times.  During this session we will review current research  illustrating the role that the environmental plays in the transmission of healthcare-associated infections.  We will discuss new processes and tools that can be used to improve environmental hygiene.  Dawn Hughes, OR Director, will discuss her experience implementing an OR environmental hygiene program that improved the thoroughness of between-case cleaning while decreasing room turnover time.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the role of environmental contamination in the transmission of health care-associated infections
  • Discuss the latest research on environmental hygiene
  • List processes and tools to improve environmental hygiene
  • Discuss the results of a pilot program to improve environmental hygiene in the O.R.
