How Baylor Scott & White Health successfully integrated medical devices systemwide

Leadership at Baylor, Scott & White Health (BSWH) recognized it had a problem that hospitals and healthcare organizations across the country grapple with -- truly integrating medical device data across its system. Medical device data is the key resource to transform reactive care to insight-driven, proactive care. When data is aggregated and presented in context to the patient, care providers can prioritize and coordinate interventions more effectively and efficiently.

Unfortunately, across the spectrum of medical device types and manufacturers, data standardization is rare. Conventional hospital infrastructure may not be able to capture all the required data from the many devices that produce it, as well as deliver it to various end-point systems at the right frequencies.

Baylor Scott & White Health decided to address the problem by integrating staff from multiple specialties into a single, cohesive team to deploy, maintain, and support medical device integration across the system. They supported this approach by leveraging a platform that is truly agnostic and scalable to deploy across the enterprise, also combining the EMR design/build and the technical components for integration.

As a result, BSWH reduced the number of incidents, lowered the resolution times, and implemented an enterprise architecture, resulting in cost savings in procurement, deployment, and support. They will share their successes, failures, and what they believe other organizations should consider when strategizing about interoperability solutions in this space.
