7:30 PM CT Ben Franklin once said, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." This saying still holds true today, particularly for surgery patients at high-risk of infections. Surgical site infections of groin wounds after vascular procedures are a common and often preventable cause of morbidity and mortality, especially in patients with obesity. A study published in Annals of Vascular Surgery found 31 percent of patients who underwent a lower extremity revascularization procedure with a groin incision developed a surgical site complication. These complications doubled length of stay and led to a 50 percent reoperation rate.
