Geisinger’s keys to a successful EPCS implementation

Thursday, June 20th | 12:00pm - 1:00pm CT

Electronic prescribing for controlled substances (EPCS) has significant benefits, including time and cost savings, increased efficiency, improved provider satisfaction, and better patient safety. EPCS can also reduce the risk of fraud that is fueling America’s opioid epidemic, which is why more than 20 states have mandated EPCS, and beginning in 2021, all controlled substances in the Medicare Part D program must be electronically prescribed.

Geisinger Health System chose to implement EPCS in order to realize its benefits while also furthering their commitment to reduce opioid abuse and develop new and better ways to care for their patients, their members, and their communities.

In order for Geisinger to enable EPCS, as with any healthcare organization, they were required to meet specific DEA requirements. These requirements are designed to ensure end-to-end prescription security, and include provider identity proofing, credential enrollment, two-step logical access control, two-factor authentication for order singing, and robust recordkeeping and reporting.

The complexities of these and other DEA requirements for EPCS necessitate a robust, well-thought-out project plan that involves many stakeholders across the organization. Geisinger was able to successfully implement a fully compliant EPCS solution through a concerted effort. By doing so, Geisinger not only helped reduce overall opioid prescribing by about 50%, it has realized a cost savings of about $1 million per month by recouping lost clinical productivity and diversion control costs.
