How University Health's COO spots tomorrow's bed crunch in today's ED

Thursday, August 13th, 2026 | 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM CT

By the time a unit feels pressure from the emergency department, the opportunity to alleviate it has already passed. Beds get assigned late, huddles run on what already happened and staffing catches up to a surge instead of meeting it.

Bill Phillips, University Health's COO and executive vice president, is building toward the opposite: inpatient teams that plan placement, huddles and staffing off signals arriving early enough to act on.

Mr. Phillips and IT leaders have strengthened the link between ED operations and inpatient flow and layered real-time and predictive insight on top of its EHR. Mr. Phillips and Ashley Schultz, University's Health's director of IT quality assurance, will discuss how early ED visibility now shapes admission and discharge planning day to day, and what the operations and IT sides had to agree on to get there.

Learnings include:

  • Why improving inpatient flow is the fastest way to relieve ED pressure
  • How earlier ED visibility helps plan admissions and discharges
  • How predictive insight supports staffing decisions and daily huddles
  • What an operations-IT partnership looks like when building a hospitalwide flow model
