Wait times in the emergency department (ED) continue to be a challenge for health systems across the U.S. The average ED stay is over two hours for discharged patients and four hours for admitted patients. While patients often endure these wait times, extended stays lead to worse outcomes, including reduced patient safety and satisfaction, provider burnout, and higher costs.
Rush University Medical Center knew its ED needed to change. It reorganized its operations around Lean principles and partnered with Leidos, an engineering and IT company with experience developing complex command and control systems for the U.S. military, to co-develop a set of tools to enable their ED workflows. These tools provide real-time information in simplified views, allowing the care team to proactively identify delays and respond quickly to changes.
As a result, the Rush team experienced improvements in ED efficiency, staff engagement, and patient experience, all while maintaining quality and safety.
