Turning information into intelligence: How St. Joseph's command center hub maintained continuous capacity during the COVID crisis

Monday, April 12th, 2021 | 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM CT

This webinar tells the story of how one hospital's permanent operational command center hub supplied their temporary incident command center with the actionable intelligence to ensure "continuous capacity" during the pandemic.

Because an operational command center hub and spoke model was already in place, St. Joseph's entered the pandemic with a consistently high level of situational awareness and efficiency. Strong care coordination combined with a focus on length of stay and discharge resulted in knowing how long every step in the patient's progression would take, and ultimately when they could expect to be discharged. In addition, adopting a new approach to prioritizing inpatient diagnostics meant discharges and transfers no longer had to wait for testing to be completed.

Having an existing command center enabled St. Joseph's to become the only area hospital with the capacity both to accept patients from other hospitals and to continue performing elective procedures during the area's peak in COVID cases in fall and winter 2020.

Here's what we'll cover:

  • We will define “continuous capacity" even during a pandemic
  • We will explain how to avoid capacity "tipping points" during pandemic mitigation operations
  • Understanding the importance of having an operational command center in non-crisis times
  • Identifying key command center metrics that drive desirable outcomes
