UT Health San Antonio's journey to greater operational efficiency — An enterprise imaging case study

Last year, leadership at University of Texas Health San Antonio made the decision to move all inpatient imaging onto a new enterprise imaging platform. Their goal was internal consolidation. The leaders' case for making the move was airtight: Imaging consolidation would represent a sizeable step toward getting the entire health system to work like a unified enterprise instead of a patchwork of siloed groupings.

However, reactions among the 60 or so members of the radiology department were unsurprisingly mixed. Still, the health system persisted, and their efforts yielded substantial success.

Key learnings from this case study include:

  • How the health system used the enterprise imaging platform to optimize its EHR.
  • How the lessons-learned from an experienced vendor delivered a go-live "without a hitch" and "no significant downtimes."
  • The importance of physician champions and super users to drive adoption success.
  • How to gain control over worklists and use advanced radiology tools to improve efficiency.
