Managing inpatient capacity is a complex balancing act of coordinating bed availability, patient throughput, and staffing needs in unison to ensure that physical and human resources are available to accommodate patient care demand, both in real-time and with awareness to what will be needed in the future. This balancing act has only become more difficult due to COVID-19 as many health systems and hospitals continue to struggle with misaligned hospital-wide priorities, inefficient patient throughput, and staffing shortages.
